My brief is to create an enlarged sitting and dining space to replace a conservatory that is in poor condition and is either too hot or too cold for much of the year. The space must maintain openness and light to existing connections to the main house, yet be more practical for year round use, forming separate areas within the one space. I've approached it with the idea of forming a transitional space that blurs the boundaries between inside and out, breaking down rendered elements that match the main house and drawing out timber and stone finishes to connect with the landscape, We've integrated a sunny breakfasting space into the transition between the higher and lower terrace areas and connected up to existing circulation routes into the garden beyond. Opportunities have been taken to form discrete spaces for reading/contemplation that change character during the day and the existing glazed lobby space is transformed into a more practical area for coats and boots, post deliveries etc, whilst still preserving openness and light.
